AC charging is a simple and compact way of charging the electric vehicle and can be easily installed at home.
An AC charger provides power to the onboard charger of the vehicle, converting that AC power to DC to charge the battery. These chargers take ~6-7 hours to charge a vehicle completely.
They are best suitable for multiple installations like shopping complexes, workplaces and parking lots.
Type 2 IEC 62196 connector (also known as Mennekes) was declared standard by the EU for charging electric vehicles.
The connectors contain seven contact places: two small and five larger. The top row consists of two small contacts for signaling, the middle row contains three pins, the center pin is used for Earthing, while the outer two pins used for the power supply, optionally in conjunction with the two pins on the bottom row which are also for power supply.
In private spaces, charging power levels of up to 22kW are common, while charging power levels of up to 43 kW (400 V, 63 A, AC) can be used at public charging stations.
Level 2 chargers run on 208-240 volts and produce 3 kW to 19 kW AC power.
